PAUREE 34 (Stanza 34)
In the next four Pauris, Guru Nanak Dev ji describes the five stages of spiritual development –Dharam khand (stage of righteousness), Gian Khand (stage of Divine knowledge), Saram Khand (stage of spiritual effort), Karam Khand (stage of Divine Grace), and Sach Khand (the final stage of Union with God).
In this Pauri, Guruji describes the first stage of spiritual development (Dharam Khand). This is the stage of spiritual awakening, when a person starts thinking what is the purpose of coming to this world?, what is my duty while I am here?. As a person advances in this stage, he/she realizes that God created this Earth as a place for spiritual advancement by righteous action – to get closer to God, with the ultimate goal of union with God. In this stage, a person realizes that everybody will be judged according to their deeds and success and failure (in achieving the goal of spiritual advancement) will be known after departing from this world.

This is a good opportunity to memorize Gurbani, one Pauri at a time. You can concentrate better and enjoy more if you recite bani without looking at the gutka.

DID YOU KNOW
ONE SPIRIT, DIFFERENT BODIES
After Guru Nanak Dev ji, none of the Gurus used their names in their writings. They always used the name “Nanak” as if everything was written by Guru Nanak Dev ji. This reinforces our belief that all our Gurus had the same spirit in different bodies. The eternal source of spiritual knowledge that was within Guru Nanak Dev ji was passed on to each Guru and they uttered Gurbani that originated from the same source.)
