PAUREE 38 (Stanza 38)
In the previous four Pauris, Guru Nanak Dev ji described the five stages of spiritual development. In this Pauri, he describes how a person can reach those stages and achieve union with God. Guruji explains this beautifully by taking an example of a goldsmith minting a coin. The goldsmith heats the gold in a crucible by igniting fire under the crucible, uses a bellows to provide air to intensify the fire, uses a hammer and an anvil to mold the hot gold into a beautiful coin. Similarly, Guruji says, when a person develops the essential qualities of self discipline and tolerance, makes a determined effort to awaken his mind with spiritual knowledge, remains God fearing and works hard to achieve spiritual enlightenment, and remains immersed in God’s Name with love for God and His Creation, then the merciful God bestows His Grace and the person achieves his ultimate goal of becoming one with God.
JAT PAHAARAA DHEERAJ SUNIAAR
Let self-discipline be your shop, tolerance your goldsmith (self-discipline and tolerance are two essential qualities if you wish to embark upon the task of achieving spiritual enlightenment)

(Guru Granth Sahib is full of spiritual knowledge. Awakening your mind with spiritual knowledge means understanding Gurbani.)

BHAU KHALAA AGAN TAPTAO
Let God’s fear be your bellows, disciplined hard work your fire and heat (with God’s fear in heart, work hard in strict discipline to achieve spiritual enlightenment).
bhau: fear, khalaa: bellows used to provide air to intensify fire, implies God’s fear (which keeps a person in discipline) will help to intensify efforts towards spiritual enlightenment, agan: fire, tap: disciplined hard work, tao: heat
BHAANDAA BHAO AMRIT TIT DHAAL
Let God’s love be your crucible, melt God’s Name like gold in the crucible (with God’s love in heart, immerse yourself in His Name with love and devotion)
bhaanda: pot, crucible, implies heart, bhao: love, implies love for God and His Creation, amrit: nector that makes a person immortal, implies God’s Name, tit: in that, dhaal: melt, implies immerse your heart in God’s Name
GHARIAE SABAD SACHI TAKSAAL
This is the true mint where God’s name is minted (this is the way a person can mold himself to become spiritually enlightened).

JIN KAO NADAR KARAM TIN KAAR
This deed is accomplished by only those who are blessed by His Divine Grace.

NANAK NADREE NADAR NIHAAL II38II
Nanak says, by His merciful Grace, they receive the eternal bliss and become one with God..
nadree: the one with merciful glance, God, nadar: Divine glance, nihaal: happy, Divine bliss, implies union with God
This is a good opportunity to memorize Gurbani, one Pauri at a time. You can concentrate better and enjoy more if you recite bani without looking at the gutka.

AADI GRANTH AND DASAM GRANTH
Guru Gobind Singh ji, before passing away, gave Guruship to Guru Granth Saheb, also called Aadi Granth” (Aadi means the first).
Guru Gobind Singh ji included the bani (writings) of the 9th Guru, Guru Teg Bahadur ji, in Guru Granth Saheb, which was originally compiled by Guru Arjan dev ji (the 5th guru).
None of Guru Gobind Singh ji’s writings are included in Guru Granth Saheb. His bani (writings) are included in a separate Granth called Dasam Granth (Dasam means tenth).
Two of the five banis included in our Nitnem (the daily prayers) are written by Guru Gobind Singh Ji. These are Jaap Saheb and ten Saweyeas. Chopaee Saheb, which is included in Rehras Saheb, is also written by Guru Gobind Singh ji.
